About the Women's and Gender Studies Program

The first of its kind at a Louisiana State University, the UNO Women’s Studies Program was founded in 1985 as a unique interdisciplinary program available through the College of Liberal Arts. Currently 21 faculty members representing ten different departments work with students and scholars to provide a critical framework in which to examine the world through the lens of gender. Across cultural, disciplinary, historical, regional, and theoretical perspectives, the program explores the philosophical value of “female” and male,” as well as the cultural activity of men and women; social roles and sexual identities in the contexts of race, class, ethnicity and nationality; and the impact of sex and gender on who we are and what we do. In 2009, the program was retitled Women's and Gender Studies.
